Motorists in Swansea will get an early Christmas present with the offer of free car parking in the city centre.
Shoppers and traders in the City Centre will benefit during the busy Christmas period by offering free parking at its St David’s Multi-Storey Car Park (Monday – Saturday) starting from 19 November.
The ‘free after 3’ offer will be available to motorists who enter the car park after 3pm and are looking to take advantage of the Christmas late night shopping.
Mark Thomas, Swansea Council’s Cabinet Member for Environment Services, said: “The free parking offer is a great way of showing support to local businesses in the city centre. We all know the period over Christmas is one of the busiest times for local shops, especially in the city centre. I’m confident that the free parking incentive will attract more visitors to the city centre this Christmas.”
Russell Greenslade, Chief Executive of Swansea Business Improvement District, said: “This great offer will help to attract shoppers who are keen to take advantage of our city centre businesses.
“We are always happy to collaborate with Swansea Council on initiatives which help to enhance our city centre offer and I would like to thank the Council for providing this new offer supporting our BID area businesses.”
The news follows a council announcement that shoppers looking for great gift ideas will have the boost of a clear Kingsway this Christmas.
Roadworks that are transforming the city centre main road with a £12m regeneration programme will be cleared of construction apparatus for around two months from late November. Access will be safe for pedestrians, motorists, public transport and commercial traffic.
Cllr Thomas said: “Make no bones about it: Swansea will be open for Christmas!
“The city centre will be as accessible as possible, with The Kingsway being an obstacle-free route to and from our wonderful local shops and business. Orchard Street will also have far fewer obstacles.
“As everybody knows, the Kingsway infrastructure project is a substantial, complex project; it’s right that we plan and communicate well ahead for everybody who wants to enjoy a busy festive period in our city centre.”
