Many of our Swansea BID area businesses are looking for ways to boost their eco-credentials. How we travel to and from work is a key consideration. Swansea BID is working with Swansea University to encourage our BID area businesses and their workforces to make good use of the Santander Cycles Swansea bike share scheme, as well as the regular bus services which serve the University and the City Centre. These bus services include Fabian Way Park & Ride and The Quadrant.
Russell Greenslade, Swansea BID Chief Executive, said: “We are well served in the City Centre for transport options, with the train and bus station in the heart of the City Centre, and with a range of car parks and car parking options. We would encourage our BID area workers to consider the bus and cycle options on offer too, thanks to the popular Santander Cycle Share scheme, and the regular bus services. Some people may not be aware that Swansea University’s Unibus services are, in fact, open to all users, not simply to students. We hope the bike share scheme will be an attractive offer for some as the weather gets more pleasant throughout spring and summer.”
The Santander Cycles bike share scheme is simple to use. Bikes can be booked via a phone app and they can be left, after use, at any of the docking stations in Swansea, including at the Civic Centre, the National Waterfront Museum, Fabian Way Park and Ride, as well as Swansea University’s Bay and Singleton Park Campuses. It is hoped that as the bike service gets more popular, more docking hubs will be introduced in the City Centre.
Annual membership of the Santander bike scheme is £60 and from 1 May there will be a monthly membership option available at £10 per month. Both of these options offer the first 30 minutes of your ride free. Alternatively, cyclists can use the bikes on a pay-as-you-ride basis.
The Swansea University bus services run frequently, with two such services running 24 hours during term time:
- The number 8 and the number 4 Singleton to Morriston Hospital services are 24 hours, and are accessible to everyone, not just students.
- These are 24-hour services Monday to Saturday and they run until around 11.30pm on a Sunday too. Both buses serve the Quadrant Bus station, with the 8 serving Hendrefolilan Student Village in the night time but not in the day.
- Service 8X runs every 20 minutes, Monday to Friday in the daytime, and it runs between Singleton and Bay Campus directly, serving all stops along the Oystermouth road and serving the Fabian Way Park and Ride.
- The 10 Service runs between Singleton Campus, Sketty, Uplands, City Centre, Swansea Railway Station, Strand, Fabian Way to Bay Campus and back. This runs until around 2pm with less frequency and earlier finish times out of term time until 10.15pm.
